Doctor Kylene Kinney is running for her life, from men who have been stalking for months. She escapes to Bancroft, stowing away in a pickup truck, only to meet Taran McCoy, an Ojibwa carpenter.

Taran McCoy, a modern-day Ojibwa, finds his stowaway and, trusting his instincts, he helps her clean up and feeds her, making her stay with him so that he can protect her.

He tells Kylene that she was destined to be his wife, surprising her. Taking her deep into the woods he hides her from her enemies. When her gift of hands-on healing is revealed, he isn't surprised.

Psychic abilities run in his family. His Grandfather communicates to his grandchildren through telepathy and Taran finds unusual pieces of wood, carving images that the wood 'tells' him to carve.

At one with the Earth, Taran finds himself drawn to Kylene and will protect her at all costs. Kylene finds herself imprisoned in the arms of a warrior and can't decide if she wants to run into unknown danger, or stay and lose herself in the strong arms of an Ojibwa.
